Volunteer Positions at
The Arc of Alameda County
Awards Banquet
This is an annual event during which we honor outstanding clients, staff, businesses and other stakeholders. It is going to be held at Scott's Seafood Grill and Bar at Jack London Square on July 23, 2010. Please email or call Richard Fitzmaurice if you are interested in volunteering at the awards banquet.
Bowling
We have had a “Day at the Lanes” in the past but want to do it annually. It’s a day of fun for the people we serve and a fundraiser. We’re looking for someone to Chair the event. That means working with the Arc’s Judy Vierra and Richard Fitzmaurice to do such things as select a date, make arrangements with a bowling center, arrange for food, help organize the registration table, get T-shirts and trophy’s, and make lane assignments. We are also looking for 3-4 other volunteers to help the Chairperson.
Public Policy Forum – Fall and Winter
Our Forums are held quarterly so we could use some volunteer assistance for the ones in September and early December (dates to be determined). Duties include assisting staff on program selection, coordinating times with speakers, arranging for AV equipment, copying handout material, room set-up, staffing the registration area and clean-up. 1-2 volunteers would be perfect.
Fundraising
The Arc of Alameda County has an on-going fundraising event called “The 20/20 Campaign.” This is an opportunity for you to help us survive the current State Budget Crunch by asking 20 friends to donate $20 to the Arc. Arc members, Board Members, Staff and Clients are already involved. You’re welcome to join! We supply you with the brochures and other material you need. It’s an easy “sell” since your not asking for a large donation from any one individual. The donation total increases dramatically, however, the more participants we have. We are a 501(c)(3) non profit agency and will be happy to send a thank you note and receipt to your donors.
Another Fundraising Idea
Add The Arc of Alameda County to your organization’s “beneficiary” list when the group holds a fundraiser. Maybe it’s a golf club that has an annual charity tournament, a school where students are raising money for a community organization, a service club holding its annual charity gala, whatever; we would be very grateful to be on the list and would be happy to make a presentation to your organization to let you know what we do.
Administrative Help
From time to time, we have special projects that staff would love to have some help completing. Typically, the projects would involve stuffing envelopes or putting together packages of information. Examples include making-up 20/20 Campaign packets or assembling the handouts for a Public Policy Forum. We might also have you copying flyers that we need for a mailing. These projects would usually be done at our San Leandro Administrative facility. Other, similar projects come-up from time to time at our offices in Hayward, Union City, Livermore, and at our Vocational Development Center located in another building in San Leandro.
We would be happy to put your name on the list and call you as necessary.
Clean-Up/Painting Days
Every so often, we simply need to perform some clean-up work or do some painting at our five locations in the County. These projects are scheduled by the managers at each location and usually involve parents/relatives of clients and often the clients themselves. Other volunteers are welcome, however, and we would be happy to put your name on a list and call you when a clean-up day is scheduled at a location near you.
Locations are:
- San Leandro – Administrative Center, 2700A Merced Street
- San Leandro – Vocational Development Center, 14700 Doolittle Drive
- Hayward – Walpert Center, 1101 Walpert Street
- Livermore – 1951 Rutan Drive
- Union City – 34135 Seventh Street
Board of Directors/Committees
Another volunteer opportunity is to join the Board of Directors of The Arc of Alameda County. The Board Meets every other month - in January, March, May, July, September and November with committee meetings held in the intervening months. Committees are Finance, Program, and Fundraising. Starting by serving on a Board Committee might better suit those with limited experience serving on a Board. Let us know if you're interested in serving in either capacity and we will connect you with the President of the Board so you can get more information.
Grant Writer/Consultant
We apply for grants from various organizations when appropriate and could use an experienced person to review our applications and perhaps give us a few tips.
Entertainers
The people we serve love entertainers. If you sing, dance, play guitar, juggle or whatever, let’s explore the possibility of putting on a short program at one or more of our locations.
We freely admit that we can’t think of everything, so if you have a skill you think we can use – even occasionally; feel free to contact us.
For example, every so often we need advice about a building – there might be a construction-related issue at one of our locations or we may be thinking about moving into a new facility. Having someone we can call who has the necessary construction expertise would be extremely valuable. There are hundreds of other skills that an organization needs occasionally – we’d love to have you on the list.
